Gradius was ported to most of the home computers and consoles of the time. Gradius was the spiritual successor to Scramble (1981). Due to its popularity, there were many Gradius sequels, most notably Salamander (1986), Gradius II: Gofer’s Revenge (1988), Gradius Gaiden (1997) and Gradius V (2004). Gradius inspired the mother of all side-scrolling shooters – R-Type (1987), a game that would define the genre thereafter.

Atari ST

The Atari ST (also known as The Atari 520ST) Personal Computer was released in North America in June 1985. The Atari ST was a 16-bit home computer that shipped with 512 KB of RAM and supported a colour palette of 512 colours. A 3.5-inch DD floppy disk drive was sold separately. It was one of the first home computers to use a colour GUI (Graphical User Interface) called GEM. The Atari ST sold for $799.99 with a monochrome monitor or $999.99 with a colour monitor.
